PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Brooks family of Chesapeake didn't have a Merry Christmas. Instead, they had a funeral. PPD: Man killed in early morning shooting Bryan Brooks, 33, died last month in an early morning shooting on Garrett Street in Portsmouth, and his heartbroken family wants answers they currently don't have. "Well, right now, I'm beyond broken," said the victim's grandfather, David Brooks. "I don't know which way to go right now." On the speakerphone, the younger David A. Brooks recalled the scene in the 1800 block of Garrett Street in Portsmouth during the early morning hours of Dec. 21. "And it happened around, like, 4 a.m. that morning," the younger Brooks said. "So Brian was going inside the house or something. And then, he said that the 16-year-old son shot him." Brooks' family wants answers. They say his wife has three sons and Bryan has two daughters. "We keep calling the detective," said Bryan Brooks' sister, J'Nea Barnes. "As always, 'we'll get back to you. There's 11 other homicides. There's only five detectives. We're working on the case.' We're not getting enough answers." Court documents reveal that the victim's wife sought emergency protective orders in 2022 and 2023 following an alleged attempted break-in and allegedly tossing the wife's phone in the Elizabeth River. Asked whether there was any hostility between Brian, his wife and the children, the victim's mother, Sarah Felton said, "not that I know of, no. ... So I'm just not understanding how this could have happened." Said the older Brooks: "I just hope they get it resolved, because somebody killed him." Bryan Brooks is survived by two daughters. He was employed by a sign company, and he was poised to take over his dad's dump truck business. 10 On Your Side is awaiting information from police on suspect information in this case.
