CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte is on high alert as the biggest charlotte sporting event of the young year is Friday night, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The game will be played just days after the terror attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people. CMPD says they are ramping up security at the game because of what happened New Year’s morning. The FanFest displays around Bank of America Stadium are up in anticipation of Friday night’s game. However, it’s the safety of the fans that has CMPD increasing patrol after the terror attack in New Orleans New Years morning. “These moments serve as a stark reminder of the importance of preparation and vigilance. We’ve taken this opportunity to closely evaluate and enhance our own security measures for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl,” said CMPD Lt. Crystal Fletcher. WCCB saw officers Thursday afternoon barricading each entrance. Amy Holland came from Minnesota to watch her daughter play in the school’s band Friday night. She said she feels safe and likes seeing the extra cops patrolling but also said she may not be attending the game if it weren’t for family. “I would only go if she was going to be there,” Holland said of her daughter. CMPD wouldn’t go into specifics about their plan but did say they are adding even more security than New Year’s Eve in uptown. “A lot of vehicles, heavy equipment, blocking areas that you don’t want vehicles coming in from,” said Chris Swecker. Swecker, a former FBI Assistant Director, said that increased police presence will likely go for about four blocks around the stadium. As law enforcement attempts to stop a copycat terror event. “I think that there’s a copycat feature to this. And I think law enforcement and whoever’s responsible for security for events around the country and parades and that sort of thing are going to have to be really on top of their game,” explained Swecker.
