BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — If you still have one holiday decoration hanging around — your Christmas tree — it might be time to let it go. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns that more than one-third of Christmas tree fires occur in January. Tom Lyons, Director of Communications for NFPA, explains the risk. “After the holidays, we just recommend getting it out of your house," Lyons said. "We all love them. They’re really a special part of Christmas. However, they are a large combustible item in your home, so they raise fire risk.” While Christmas tree fires aren’t common, when they do happen, they can be severe. Between 2018 and 2022, these fires caused $15 million in property damage. “The longer a Christmas tree is in your house, the more dangerous it is, because there will be some natural drying that goes on. Whether or not you’re watering it, a dry tree burns much quicker than a well-watered tree. If you know the needles on the tree are coming off excessively, it is time for that tree to go," Lyons said. First baby of the New Year It’s not just the tree that can cause problems; holiday lights can also become a fire hazard if not handled properly. “Make sure that you are unplugging those lights from the plug itself and not tugging on the wire, because that can damage the covering and the insulation and the wires for the lights, which can cause a hazard down the road," Lyons said. "You also want to take that opportunity to examine those light strings, and if they’re old and worn out, or if you see any parts of the lights that are damaged, it might be time to replace those."  When it’s time to dispose of your tree, the NFPA recommends using local recycling programs. Storing trees in garages or sheds can still pose a fire risk. In Minot, residents have until January 4th to dispose of Christmas trees at no charge. In Bismarck, tree pickup runs through January 9th. Just place your tree out on your regular garbage day. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
