Purists who enjoy a low-scoring game more than a 7-6 goal-fest would have been in hockey heaven Jan. 3 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The Monsters and Grand Rapids Griffins were tied 0-0 after the first period, 0-0 after two and 0-0 after three periods. After 60 minutes, the Griffins had launched 33 shots on Monsters goalie Jet Greaves. The Monsters peppered Ville Husso with 27 shots in regulation without success. The 10,171 fans inside the arena cheered every save by Greaves and groaned in unison when Husso stopped the puck. Overtime did not produce a winner, but the Griffins prevailed in a shootout, 1-0, when their first skater, Joe Snively, snapped the puck past Greaves. All three Monsters in the shootout — Luca Del Bel Belluz, Rocco Grimaldi and Gavin Brindley — failed to score. #Monsters goalie Jet Greaves made 35 saves Thursday night, but the home team lost to Grand Rapids in a shootout at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, 1-0. pic.twitter.com/TTZQ6WcWjY — Jeff Schudel (@jsproinsider) January 3, 2025 Brindley was the Monsters’ last hope with the score 1-0 Grand Rapids after two rounds, but Husso clamped his pads together and turned aside Brindley’s attempt to force a fourth round in the shootout. “Both goalies played really well,” Monsters coach Trent Vogelhuber said. “They scored one in the skills competition at the end. Not much to say. “I liked a lot of our game. We had a lot of chances. We just didn’t capitalize. Two good teams that were playing hard. I thought it was pretty even most of the way. We had plenty of chances that could have gone. They didn’t, so you move on.” #Monsters coach Trent Vogelhuber on losing 1-0 in a shootout despite 31 shots on goal: "We had plenty of chances that could have gone. With less than four minutes left in regulation, Greaves got tangled up with Grand Rapids left wing Tim Gettinger outside the right post, but he was able to quickly get back to the crease before the Griffins could get a shot off. Greaves made one of his best saves of the game with 7:01 left in the second period when he was screened by a Griffins player but still managed a glove save on a slapshot by Brogan Rafferty from above the right circle. Greaves gave credit to the defensemen in front of him for giving him clear sightlines when the Griffins did shoot the puck. Greaves did a good job of making sure the Griffins did not get many second-chance opportunities. “I thought our guys did a great job tonight,” Greaves said. “Obviously there are times when there’s going to be traffic in front, so for me it’s just trying to find a sightline and doing what I can to keep the puck out of the net.” The Monsters (18-10-1-12) outshot the Griffins, 4-2, in the overtime. Their best scoring chance occurred when Belluz and Grimaldi had a 2-on-1 break, but Grimaldi didn’t get a shot off cleanly.
