$142,000 new budget request made for Hotel Topeka
Jan 02, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka City Council will soon make a decision on whether or not to provide additional cash to go towards fixing up Hotel Topeka.
Topeka City Council agenda documents for the upcoming meeting on Jan. 14 show that councilmembers will be taking action on another Hotel Topeka funding request. The request amounts to a little more than $142,000 and, if authorized, would go towards site repairs and improvements at the hotel.
The City of Topeka received a request from the Topeka Development Council (TDC) for additional funding for the hotel to cover the cost of a project that councilmembers originally had approved around $125,000 for in June 2024. The project is now estimated to cost $268,000, requiring the approval of the new $142,000 amount.
City leaders have made similar funding approvals to help keep the hotel running or to make necessary repairs since they made the decision to purchase it in October 2023. City councilmembers approved $500,000 to help operate the building in February 2024 and a little more than $72,000 in December 2024.

Hotel Topeka has been described as a 'distressed asset' in the past, with costs moving near $10 million in October 2024 with the approval of an additional $201,000 for the structure. Topeka leaders were informed in December 2024 the hotel would see a nearly $900,000 net operating loss in 2025.
