ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Crime remains a big issue in New Mexico; but the metro area's top prosecutor said the numbers show his office is doing more to get murderers, shoplifters, and other criminals off the street. KRQE News 13 talked with the Bernalillo County District Attorney about it Thursday. It takes a while to turn a ship in the ocean, a big ship, but we're starting to turn." Bregman is now heading into his first elected term after taking over the office in January 2023 from now-New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez. "It's been an amazing time. I've been so impressed and honored to work with people here in this office. We have over 300 individuals who wake up every day and try and make this place a safer place," Bregman said. Underscoring that is the work on homicides: Bregman says the past two years have yielded around 280 murder convictions—more than 130 of which happened just last year. "Those are taking violent people off the streets and putting them in the penitentiary where they belong," Bregman said. He also highlighted more than 1,400 pretrial detention motions with more than half of those granted in 2024. "We have, over the last two years, filed more pretrial detention motions and held more people pretrial than any time in the history of this office," Bregman said. The office saw 33 minors charged in homicide cases over the past two years; of those, 24 kids have been indicted on first-degree murder in his tenure. Throughout his time in office, Bregman has promised to make juvenile justice a top priority: "It's really something that troubles me, it's something that we're focused on, we continue to expand our juvenile division, put more prosecutors in there." Beefing up the staff, Bregman said the office has added 73 lawyers and 90 additional support staff. "It's making a difference in our overall success rate, it's making a difference in lowering caseloads for the individual prosecutors which means better cases presented to juries and ultimately better justice," Bregman said. He also noted inroads made on retail crime—charging 400 felony and 760 misdemeanor shoplifting cases throughout his time in office. The DA's office was also able to secure 20 sexual assault convictions from long-standing cases; nearly 1,600 DWI convictions; and ten vehicular homicide convictions due to DWI and reckless driving. "This is no victory lap, by any means. There's so much work that needs to be done, and I will not be satisfied until we don't have that fear of crime; until we do reduce crime significantly in this community," Bregman said, "But, we're on the right track and that's what I can tell you after two years of being the DA." Bregman said he'll focus efforts on changing the children's code this legislative session.
