The brief blast of cooler air New Mexico felt earlier this week is already gone. Heading into the weekend the state can expect temperatures upwards of 20 degrees above average. A high pressure system is forming to the south of New Mexico today. The high pressure is strengthening and amplifying an upper level ridge. This amplifying ridge is responsible for the significantly warmer temperatures we can expect today through Saturday. The largest temperature increases are across eastern New Mexico. Today, they are already experiencing temperatures 20-30 degrees warmer than yesterday. Temperatures across New Mexico will continue to warm on Friday and Saturday. We can expect temperatures in the 60's across central New Mexico. On Saturday an upper level low will take precedent. This low and its accompanying trough in the jet stream will clip northern New Mexico Saturday afternoon. The change in flow of the Jetstream and the low pressure will bring a very windy afternoon for most of New Mexico. Wind gusts ranging for 35-55 mph are forecasted across eastern and central New Mexico. The strongest wind gusts are anticipated to be in northeastern New Mexico. A potentially stronger low pressure will be forming at the end of this weekend and into early next week. Models are in agreement that the low will settle around Arizona by Tuesday. However, the models are in disagreement about the strength of the low pressure. The stronger the low, the better chances New Mexico will have for snowfall early next week.
