Some tips to remember and practice to avoid potential fires are as follows: Make sure homes have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Plan and practice an escape plan with kids and pets. Keep matches and lighters out of reach from children and use child safety locks on cabinets. Keep space heaters three feet away from anything that could catch fire and turn them off when leaving a room or going to bed. Avoid cooking fires as cooking appliances are the leading cause of fires throughout the United States. Stay in the kitchen while cooking. Use a timer as a reminder that cooking is happening. Keep flammable items away from the stovetop. Do not use the oven as a storage space. If a small grease fire occurs while cooking, smother the flame with a lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Officials add that if anyone is ever in doubt in regards to an active fire, they should get out of the home and call 9-1-1.
