The West North Avenue Development Authority (WNADA) wants to hear from residents and community members to help them decide on a design for the Transit Access and Pedestrian Safety Improvement (TAPSI) project at West North Avenue and Druid Hill – McCulloh intersections. The TAPSI project is a pilot program focused on implementing measures to improve pedestrian safety at the two intersections, ranging from pavement art to concrete planters, bus stop platforms bookended by bin blocks, and other elements determined through engagement with the community. These features would be temporary as WNADA would then gauge which elements were most effective in keeping pedestrians safe at those busy intersections. The most effective features would then be chosen for more permanent long-term improvements. The WNADA is seeking community input on the pavement art options developed through community engagement, as several were submitted as possibilities in October and November. The last day to vote for your favorite design will be Jan. 31 and the final selected design will be revealed in February or March.Inspiration for the pavement designs come from as nearby as the local florist shop that anchors the business district, to the Pan-African color palette. One concept for pavement art at the North Avenue and Druid Hill Avenue intersection springs from a local boxing gym’s logo and motto. Umar Boxing’s “No Hooks Before Books” motto inspired the geometric patterns that evoke both the lines of a boxing ring and the lines of a book, and the colors echo the boxing gym’s palette inspired by West African textiles of red, green, and indigo.“Read Between the Ropes” was inspired by Umar Boxing gym’s motto and colors.A design for the pavement art at North Avenue and McCulloh Street is inspired by the history of flower shops on this corner, including Bonaparte’s Florist Shop and Fleurs D’Ave. The concept is filled with bright pink dogwood flowers surrounded by bright aqua green foliage leaf designs.WNADA is not only inviting people to vote, but to share the project with friends and neighbors, so that input from as many people as possible can be considered. The form has explanations of each design, concept renderings, and space for comments and feedback. To vote for your favorite designs, click this link.
