ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Used Christmas trees feed dozens of llamas. A local nonprofit director has a unique way to help those looking to recycle a Christmas tree and it also benefits some local rescue llamas.  "The finer, the thinner the needle, the more it seems they prefer those," says Lynda Liptak, director at Llamas del Sol.   Now that Christmas has come and gone, one nonprofit is reaping the benefits as over 50 Christmas trees are now in the hands of Llamas del Sol. Those unwanted trees are a sweet treat for around two dozen southwest rescue llamas here in Albuquerque.  "The llamas will run to the trailer, they will see them coming when we are getting a drop-off. They will run over, they will start nibbling before the truck even stops," said Liptak. Lynda Liptak director of Llamas del Sol says the llamas tend to go to elm trees and leave the piñon trees for last.   "It's also really good for their gut biome and prevention of parasites and they also use them as a breath mint,” said Liptak. It should take the group roughly three months to get through it all.  This is the third-biggest donation they've received to date and Liptak says they are good on trees until next year. "Every year, I look forward to this donation of Christmas trees," she said.    The City of Albuquerque is also taking tree donations which will be accepted until January 8.
