Light snow Friday ahead of a late weekend winter storm threat
Jan 02, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Thursday! It’s a quiet and chilly Thursday ahead of active winter weather moving through the region. The active pattern starts with a round of light snow showers late tonight into your Friday morning. This will only put a light coating down for most of the area. Be alert for isolated slick spots on the roadway to begin your Friday, especially in eastern Kentucky. This quick moving clipper systems helps draw in a shot of arctic air that will set the stage for our next system on the way Sunday into Monday.
All forms of winter precipitation are possible across the region Sunday into Monday as a wintry mess sweeps through the area. The best chance of seeing just snow will be across northern Kentucky into Indiana and Ohio. There will be mainly rain to our south into far southern Kentucky and into Tennessee. Areas in between will be where we will see our greatest potential for freezing rain/ice.
Thanks to the cold air in place from the Friday clipper, this may start off as snow and freezing rain during the day on Sunday. As the day progresses some slightly warmer air will try to work in from the south. This will likely push the snow further to the north. How far north? That is still to be determined. As this slightly warmer air works northward… There will likely be colder, below freezing rain still at the surface. This will lead to the freezing rain/ice threat.
It is still way too early to know who will and won’t see the ice. What we do know is that the further north you go, the chance of snow will increase. The further south you go, the rain chance will be higher. It’s areas in between that will need to remain alert for freezing rain Sunday into Sunday night.
Everyone will be changing to snow showers on the backside of this system as it sweeps eastward Sunday night into Monday. Winds will increase a bit as this system passes. This would not be good news for areas with ice accretion, as wind gusts could lead to more damage with the ice on tree limbs and power lines. These wind gusts will also lead to very cold wind chills as well.
In next couple days we will be fine tuning this forecast with exact locations for the precipitation types and exact snowfall totals, so stay tuned for that.
Frigid air will be with us next week. This will lead to single digit lows and wind chills well below zero in spots. This frigid air will likely remain in place through much of the week and will likely lead to more wintry chances through the middle of the month.
