NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston is repeatedly named among the top destinations in the country, and as the Lowcountry grows, so too does the terminal at Charleston International Airport and the number of new flights set to land in the new year. Charleston International Airport leaders said Thursday it recorded an uptick in holiday passenger travel this season. More than 114,500 passengers were welcomed through the TSA security checkpoint between December 19 and January 1, an increase of 1.5% compared to the timeframe in 2023. “We are thrilled to see passenger numbers grow during this important travel period,” said Elliott Summey, Executive Director and CEO of the Charleston International Airport. “This increase is a testament to our team’s commitment to delivering a world-class travel experience and the continued strength of Charleston as a sought-after destination. We’re excited for what’s ahead in 2025 and beyond.” As passenger travel grows, the Charleston International Airport is also growing to meet the demand. Travelers will see ongoing expansion efforts including improvements to passenger service and terminal space, new flight routes, and the construction of a new state-of-the-art parking garage and rental car center, which aims to accommodate even more travelers in the coming years. Ashley Cooper Provision began operations in early December, and Starbucks started brewing at the airport last summer. Now, Breeze Airways will add nonstop service to New Haven, Connecticut with four weekly flights beginning February 6, and BermudAir will begin the first-ever nonstop flight between Charleston and the island of Bermuda this coming spring. Flights, departing every Saturday, will officially launch on April 19. Spencer Pryor, the airport's chief communications officer, said the CHS's ongoing expansion and growing list of direct flights will help create a seamless travel experience for leisure and business travelers.
