BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Lieutenant Rick Dossey with the Bakersfield Police Department's special operations group joined 17 News at Sunrise to discuss crowd safety measures.
Lt. Dossey's team helps plan for large scale events such as the unfortunate event that occurred yesterday on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
The suspect 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabar reportedly drove around barricades to plow into the crowd on one of the most high-profile streets in the country for people to ring in the New Year.
Optimism reigns as 2025 breaks over Bakersfield and the world
In situations like this, Lt. Dossey says it important to learn from these types of situations so as to prevent devastation and tragedy.
Approaches such as barricading streets, keeping all vehicles away from large public events, and constantly being alert are just a few ways of mitigating predictable and unexpected events.
