Turning characters from the DC Comics world into feature films has not gone smoothly over recent years from the flop “The Flash” to the bad “Black Adam.” The list goes on and on. That trend appears to be changing with James Gunn taking over as DC Studios co-CEO. Advance footage of this summer’s “Superman” has been getting positive responses. That goes along with the success of the seven-episode Max original adult animated series “Creature Commandos” written and executive produced by Gunn. The streaming channel series follows a secret team of incarcerated monsters who have been recruited for missions that are deemed far too dangerous for humans. They aren’t the best option, but even the worst option is better than none. Leading the team of misfits is Rick Flag Sr. (voiced by Frank Grillo). He rides herd over Bride (Indira Varma), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) and Weasel (Gunn). The group will face a familiar enemy in the DC world when Rupert Thorne shows up in the episode slated to launch Jan. 2. Thorne – who will be voiced by Benjamin Byron Davis - is a shrewd and calculating crime boss who has great political and criminal power. His influence extends into Gotham's government, using bribery, intimidation, and manipulation to maintain control. He’s not your typical DC villain. Davis was not given a lot of background by Gunn to use in preparing for the role. The approach the voice actor took in finding how to speak for the character was focusing on how  everything Thorne does spawns from his desire to have more and more power. “I really don’t concern myself with too much past that,” Davis says. “But with a character whose history is as rich as Rupert Thorne’s, I have certainly done my homework in both the comic realm and knowing that I am stepping into a role that has been inhabited by some incredible actors. “I am just honored to have a little bit to do with the legacy of such a figure.” Thorne was introduced in the 1977 issue of Detective Comics No. 469. The character has shown up in a variety of animated series and video games voiced by such actors as John Vernon, Cedric Yarbrough and Victor Brandt. After landing the role, Davis asked Gunn if there were any certain runs of comics featuring Thorne that he should study. The simple answer was “no.” “I really just focused on how do I just best serve the character that is in front of me and I haven’t put too much thought beyond what may come because I certainly don’t know if anything will,” Davis says. “I focused on the task at hand. “As an actor you can’t know how your performance is going to land. You have to come at it from the point of view of the person you are playing.” That hasn’t stopped those on the Internet speculating what the future of Thorne could be in Gunn’s new universe. Although Davis has had no update on his connection to the show past this first season, a second season of “Creature Commandos” has been ordered. He was anxious to be part of “Creature Commandos” because he sees that the work Gunn is doing now is the beginning of big changes coming to productions based on DC Comics. Gunn was familiar with Davis before casting him in “Creature Commandos” through a role Davis played in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “The Belko Experiment.” Davis comes to the voice work having garnered fame for his performance as Dutch van der Linde in the video games “Red Dead Redemption” and “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Davis is quick to point out that his work on video games was very different from what he did for the animated series. His voice and body movements were both captured to play Dutch and not just his voice for the streaming series. The Boston native has done more than voice and motion capture work having appeared in “Six Feet Under,” “Without a Trace,” “MADtv,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Criminal Minds.” Davis laughs and says that he has been blessed over the years to play some really bad characters. His approach to all of them has been that no one who is the villain of a production sees themselves as being bad. “My goal ultimately is to find whatever the character's version of nobility is and try to find what is driving them to what to them seems noble,” Davis says. Other voice talents in “Creature Commandos” include Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, David Harbour as Frankenstein and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Five episodes are now available with the first season finale available Jan. 16.
