CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Over $10,000 in scholarship funding has been raised through a tournament being held in honor of two James River High School athletes who died in a crash in 2023. Just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, the two James River High seniors -- Nick Booth and Will Hammitt -- were moving north on Old Gun Road West when they sped around a curb, hit a retaining wall and flipped over. The car then caught fire with the two of them trapped inside. Hammitt and Booth both died at the scene. Authorities told 8News at the time of the crash that speed was considered a factor.
