PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The topic of making North Main Street safer has gained steam over the years as more deadly incidents happen, with a task force also being created. For Mike English, whose brother Edwin, a Marine Corps veteran, was hit and killed by a vehicle last year, the issue is personal. "And to me, I think he deserved more." The car hit Edwin on New Year's Eve last year on the corner of North Main Street and Rochambeau Avenue. Police previously said that the driver left the scene. "It was sad that it happened, but it was even sadder that someone decided to just leave him on the side of the road," Mike English said. Several days later, police arrested 32-year-old Ariel Acosta, who is accused of hitting Edwin. According to court records, Acosta posted bail and got released, with her next court date being scheduled for February. Since then, changes such as banning right turns on red, extending cross signal times and improving lighting have been implemented. Mike English said more work could still be done. "I think light is the biggest thing, coupled with cameras on the street to actually give tickets," he said. "You give people tickets, they're gonna slow down." The North Main Street task force's next meeting is set for Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Providence City Hall. NEXT: Providence police arrest attempted robbery suspect Close Thanks for signing up!
