Firework accidents send patients to emergency rooms after New Year’s
Jan 01, 2025
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — New Year’s celebrations have ended, but hospitals across the state are still treating fireworks-related injuries. While the number of cases isn’t as high as during the Fourth of July, doctors report a steady stream of burns, hand injuries, and eye damage.
Most accidents happen when people try to relight fireworks that didn’t go off or fail to keep a safe distance after lighting them. Many of these injuries could have been prevented with better preparation and safety measures.
Dr. Stephen Fox from CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck emphasized the importance of having essential first-aid tools on hand.

“The most important item people often overlook is a tourniquet. It’s easy to find online or at most drugstores," Dr. Fox said. "If there’s significant bleeding from a hand or arm injury, applying a tourniquet can quickly stop the bleeding and buy time to reach the emergency room."
Eye injuries are also common. Dr. Fox warned, “You only have two eyes. If there’s any injury to the face, it’s better to come in and have it checked out.”
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks caused eight deaths and nearly 9,700 injuries nationwide in 2023.
