JACKSONPORT, Wis (WFRV) - The annual Jacksonport Polar Bear Plunge was held this New Year’s Day, marking its 39th year with perfect weather and a community spirit that warmed even the coldest of plungers.  “This year, the conditions couldn’t be better,” said event founder J.R. Jarosh. “The weather is calm, not too cold, and the snow makes it feel like a happy snow globe here in Jacksonport.” Finalists announced for Packers FAN Hall of Fame The plunge, which has been a tradition since 1986, is known for its exhilarating chill and sense of tradition.  For Jarosh, what began as a personal challenge has evolved into a family event, with his children and wife joining in on the fun.  “Going in by myself the first few years was more of a mental thing,” Jarosh said. “Now, with friends and family, there’s a much more energetic vibe.” For some participants, like Sean Zent from California, the plunge was an unexpected challenge. “I had no choice,” Zent admitted. “This was a surprise my friend subjected me to. It's January 1st of the new year, and you’ve got to do things that scare you.”  Despite initial hesitation, Zent found strength in numbers, rallying alongside others to take the plunge. “If a five-year-old and a ten-year-old can do it, so can I,” he suggested. Zent, who had ruptured his Achilles tendon just months prior, was unsure of what to expect but was glad to have taken the leap.  "Yeah, it’s freezing, 33.8 degrees,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “But you know, this is awesome. I think more people should do a polar plunge, or jump out of an airplane. On the other side of fear, is bliss.” Long-time Green Bay captain to retire after 27 years with Metro Fire Department As the event continues to grow in popularity, Jarosh offered a piece of advice to fellow plungers. “Savor the moment. Look around, take it in, and embrace the experience," Jarosh said. "The plunge may be cold, but for many, the memories made are worth every second of discomfort."
