Why your grocery bills in Kansas will drop as of today
Jan 01, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Kansans will notice something different on their grocery receipts in 2025 -- no state sales tax on most foods. On Wednesday, Jan. 1, the state’s food sales tax fell from 2% to 0%.
In May 2022, Gov. Laura Kelly signed House Bill 2106 into law to completely eliminate the food sales tax by 2025. Local sales taxes will still apply.

Foods that qualify for the sales tax elimination include basic grocery items like produce, milk, eggs, bread, meat, bakery items, bottled water and soft drinks, candy and dietary supplements.
Foods that do not qualify and will still be taxed at the state’s 6.5% rate include prepared foods that are ready to eat or need reheating.
The Kansas Department of Revenue has prepared a document to answer questions about what foods are taxed:

Grocery stores will have separate lines for food and non-food items on receipts.
You will probably still see some sales tax on your receipt because city and county sales taxes still apply.
