RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A holiday which is symbolic of new beginnings already became a special occasion for Josh Stein, the newly elected governor of North Carolina. Stein was sworn in as the 76th governor of the state at 11 a.m. in Raleigh at the State Capitol. He takes on the role after North Carolina's previous governor Roy Cooper held down the position for eight years. PREVIOUSLY: NC Governor-elect Josh Stein announces new cabinet members "Today, I will take the oath of office to serve as your Governor," said Governor-elect Josh Stein. "I am honored beyond measure by your trust in me and ready to get to work for you." Stein was elected in November, defeating Republican opponent Mark Robinson with 54.9% of the state's votes. Stein has been busy since November, selecting new cabinet members to assist him in the new role. "Whether or not I earned your vote in the last election, I will work hard in the next four years to earn your trust," he continued in the video posted with the tweet. Stein's inauguration on Wednesday is part of a Council of State inauguration, where newly elected state leaders are sworn into their offices. Included besides Stein today are: State Superintendent Mo Green Attorney General Jeff Jackson State Auditor Dave Boliek Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey Following his swearing in, Gov. Stein made his first speech to the people of North Carolina as their governor. You can view the full speech in the video player below. Coming up on Jan. 11, there will also be a public, more ceremonious inauguration where Stein and others will address their plans as state leaders.
