WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Washington Reginal Alcohol Program's SoberRide program is offering D.C.-area commuters a free $15 Lyft ride for New Year's Eve. The promotion coincides with WMATA's partnership with Miller Light and Coors Light’s Free Rides Program to offer free rides on both rail and bus until 2 a.m. on January 1, 2025. Kurt Erickson, the president of WRAP, said the nonprofit runs similar promotions on several holidays, but called New Year's Eve "a big one." To claim the credit, go to soberride.com and then enter the promo code on the Lyft app. The code works until 4 a.m. on January 1 for any riders in the D.C. area. "Meaning that they're 100% preventable." Erickson cautioned those who are imbibing on New Year's Eve against driving under the influence -- not only for the harm it could cause themselves or others, but the penalties in all parts of the DMV. They include fines, a suspended license, and potential jail time. "People have options," he said.
