FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Fresno Police Department wants to remind residents that while celebratory gunfire may be a tradition for some, this activity is illegal and has the potential to lead to deadly consequences.
"Please respect everyone around you and help keep our community safe," an online post by the Fresno Police Department reads. "You don't want to be the one responsible for harming a neighbor or taking a life for a few minutes of fun."
What goes up must come back down, and according to penal code 246.3, anyone who willfully discharges a firearm in a negligent manner which could result in injury or death is guilty.
Based of findings by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), firing a firearm into the air is negligent discharge.
NLM reports that the terminal velocity required to penetrate the skin is between 148 and 197 feet per second, and bullets traveling over 200 feet per second can penetrate the skull. They say a bullet falling from the sky has the potential to reach a terminal velocity up to 600 feet per second (about 409 miles per hour), over three times the force needed to kill.
