"We receive a lot of fireworks calls or shots fired calls, a lot of driving while intoxicated or fights in progress calls as well," said Cecily Barker, Deputy Chief with the APD Field Services Bureau. To keep the roads safe, APD will be conducting DWI checkpoints. businesses are also doing what they can. The Northeast Heights bar Spectators said New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights for them with staff making sure customers are staying responsible. "We have people walking around making sure people aren't drinking too much, we want to talk to each other, making sure everyone is having a good time, but no one is taking that extra shot taking it too far," said Kristin White, serve and bartender with Spectators. APD is also urging the community to refrain from a New Year's Eve tradition of shooting their guns into the air at midnight. "Someone fired a round into the air and it actually came down and struck a child um so we do receive calls where individuals might be hurt or projectiles end up in somebody's home so we really want you think of others when you're celebrating," said Barker. Deputy Chief Cecily Barker is also reminding people to follow the noise ordinance that starts at 10 p.m. In addition to DWI checkpoints, APD will have extra resources like officers on horses, and auto-theft detectives to ensure a safe start to 2025. "Go out and enjoy your evening just remember the consequences that come when you make bad decisions whether that's spending time in jail hurting yourself or someone else those are things we are really encouraging people to think about throughout the night," said Barker. New Mexico State Police will also be conducting DWI checkpoints within the county and the state on Tuesday and throughout January.
