Cold start to the New Year
Dec 31, 2024
Temperatures are continuing to drop across New Mexico as the countdown to New Year's gets closer.
A strong cold front moved through New Mexico last night. This led to a drop in temperatures across the state today. The temperature drop was strongest across eastern New Mexico. Some places saw temperatures 20 degrees colder today than yesterday. The cold front weakened as it moved further west. So temperatures were only a few degree cooler across central and western New Mexico. Temperatures are expected to drop another few degrees tomorrow as well.
The Ball is expected to drop tonight to chilly temperatures. Most of New Mexico will be in the 20's or 10's by Midnight. Though a few areas south are expected to hold in the 30's. Light clouds are anticipated to roll into the state around 9 p.m. They will clear out before Midnight though.
Low level moisture will appear over New Mexico early on New Year's Day. This will result in a light high clouds across parts of the state. The clouds will help in keeping temperatures cool through New Year's Day.
Through the end of the week and upper level trough will be amplifying over New Mexico. This amplification will result in temperatures rapidly warming up Thursday through the weekend. The warmer temperatures will last through the weekend before once again cooling off.
A low pressure system will potentially be making its way through New Mexico this weekend. However, the exact timing is uncertain. The European model has a weaker low pressure over the Northern Mountain by Saturday Night. However, the American Model has the low lagging over Arizona and barely clipping New Mexico. The potential snowfall resulting from this low is currently a low confidence forecast. However, it is of higher confidence that the low will be bringing cooler air and more breezy conditions.
