VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – It might be one of the biggest, custom, mobile animal shelters you've ever seen. A Valencia County based group is ushering in a new trailer that they hope can be a game changer in helping get stray pets new homes. The new 40-foot customized trailer is what the Southwest Animal Team says will soon provide countless spay and neuter operations south of the metro.

"It's a big problem out there, there's just so many litters constantly turned into the Valencia County Animal Shelter that we're going to try and do anything we can to help eliminate those numbers," said Patty Mugan, Executive Director of Southwest Animal Team.
The trailer has been in the works for the last year, something Executive Director Patty Mugan said was privately funded and comes with a suite of amenities, like a surgery table. It's also equipped with a dog bath and over 30 kennels which can even be divided depending on the size of the dogs they're helping.
"They can be used for recovery after the surgeries, they can be used for transports and adoption events as well. When we're going to be able to go to an adoption event, we can pull up and open the awnings and the public can see the animals and which ones they want to adopt," said Mugan.
Mugan said the non-profit's goal is to eventually expand, so they can offer help to other shelters outside of Valencia County and New Mexico, like helping transfer animals between Colorado or even Montana.
"Be a slow start, just getting everything set up and getting a routine and everything but I think once we do, we're going to be able to have a pretty decent impact in Valencia County," said Mugan.
Southwest Animal Teams said they're currently looking for a veterinarian to work on the trailer. They're hoping to have it fully operational by the end of spring and will be fundraising for future supplies.
