Women’s basketball: Gophers improve to 141 with victory at Wisconsin

Minnesota women’s basketball is off to its best start since the Final Four team of 2003-04 after the Gophers’ 59-50 victory over Wisconsin on Tuesday in Madison, Wis. Amaya Battle led three players in double figures with 13 points.

The Gophers improved to 14-1 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten Conference. It’s their best start since they were 15-0 in 2003-04, the year Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville led Minnesota to its only NCAA tournament Final Four.
Grace Grocholski added 12 points and two steals, and Sophie Hart had 11 points and tied Mallory Heyer for the team lead with eight rebounds. Battle added six rebounds for Minnesota, which plays host to Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
Tip is set for 2 p.m. at Williams Arena.
Tori McKinney, who was named the Big Ten’s freshman of the week before Tuesday’s game, added seven points and a team-high six assists for the Gophers, who led tape to tape. They started on a 10-2 run, then scored the next 13 points to build their lead to 23-2, the final points scored on a 3-pointer by Grocholski.
Minnesota outrebounded Wisconsin, 37-32, and turned 14 Wisconsin turnovers into 12 points. The Gophers led 36-19 at intermission but had to hold off a Badgers charge late.
Serah Williams had game-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers (10-3).
