StormTracker 8: Colder weather builds in to start the new year
Dec 31, 2024
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -Colder weather returns for the start of the New Year here in Central Virginia and the possibilities of some wintry weather in parts of the state for next week.
Overnight, the skies will be turning clear in the area with lows falling into the lower to middle 40s.
New Year’s Day will be sunny over us with highs in the middle 50s. That is still on the mild side for the season.
However, there will be a bite in the air as the winds will be gusty out of the west for much of the day. A Wind Advisory is in effect for some of higher terrain of the western part of the state.
Thursday will be sunny and continued breezy over the area with highs in the mid to upper 40s, which is smack right where we should be on temperatures.
Friday, an arctic front is going to move in over us. That will bring us mostly cloudy skies. While this system looks to be moisture starved, it will have the chance to produce a few sprinkles or snow flurries (far NW) over the region.
That sets us up for a chilly first weekend of the year with highs only in the upper 30s to the lower 40s for the weekend and lows in the 20s.
After that, things could really get interesting for the start of the work week. There have been consistent signs amongst the computer models of the potential for wintry weather in the aera. However, there are also some significant differences in the models ranging from just a little dose of wintry weather to a better storm than what we have seen in the past few years
The potential is there, but let’s wait a few days before we get all excited about it. That’s when the models should start to move into agreement. One thing for sure, it will be chilly next week.
