36 year old arrested in connection to fatal Pāhoa crash

PĀHOA, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) -- Big Island police have arrested a Pāhoa man in connection to a fatal traffic collision that left one man dead.

Officials said the bicycle versus vehicle crash happened on Monday, Dec. 30 on Kahakai Boulevard.

A 36-year-old man drove east on Kahakai Boulevard in a 2018 Volkswagen GTI sedan when he hit a bicyclist in his 50s on "a blue mountain bike who was also traveling in an easterly direction in the east-bound lane of Kahakai Boulevard.
Police responded to the incident just before 8 p.m. and found the bicyclist unresponsive.
Paramedics transported him to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead just an hour later.
According to police, the Volkswagon driver was arrested for negligent homicide, operating under the influence and driving without car insurance. He remains in custody pending further investigation.
Officials have ordered an autopsy to determine the bicyclist's cause of death.
The incident marks Big Island's 29th traffic fatality of 2024, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
