NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) - There are plenty of resources throughout Northeast Wisconsin to help people avoid getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Since 2014, the Neenah Police Department has partnered with Fox Valley Cab to offer free rides on New Year's Eve from 10:30 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. It's called the 'Safe Ride Home' program. To take advantage of the service, call 920-225-9241. Officials said the service is only for the Neenah area and it will only drive people from a licensed establishment to the place where they're staying for the night. "It takes the OWI off the table for those who are smart enough to actually use it," said Joe Benoit who is the community policing coordinator for the Neenah Police Department. "It's not worth putting someone else's life in danger just because you don't want to pay for a taxi, an Uber, or to wait for a friend." Brewers reach deal with FanDuel Sports Network for broadcasting in 2025 According to officials with Fox Valley Cab, they've averaged about 40 trips each New Year's Eve for the Safe Ride Home program. Neenah police officers tell Local 5 News that the last three New Year's Eves they've only had two OWI calls total. 'We just hear a lot of positive response, we have a lot of community members who seem to really appreciate this," said Benoit. Dean Kaufert helped to launch the program back when he was the mayor of Neenah. He owns the Dome Sports Bar & Grill and has seen the impact of the 'Safe Ride Home' program. "We've made the awareness, taken it to a new level and I think people are changing their whole attitudes about drinking and driving," he said.
