DENVER (KDVR) — Icy conditions led to multiple crashes on Interstate 25 in Douglas County near Castle Rock on Tuesday night, closing the roadway in both directions.
As of 8:36 p.m., the roadway was closed from Tomah Road (Exit 174) to Plum Creek Parkway (Exit 181), according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. FOX31's Rachel Saurer arrived on scene at about 9:45 p.m. where damaged cars were still on the roadway, the I-25 frontage road was closed and bumper-to-bumper traffic was visible for miles.
Multiple areas were on accident alert Tuesday night, including Thornton and Broomfield, with Broomfield police pointing to the icy weather conditions. Thornton police asked motorists to avoid 104th Avenue and Irma, Thornton Parkway and Grant Street, and I-25 from 104th to 120th Avenue.
"We are working to get snowplow and sand out on the roads," the Thornton Police Department reported. "Drive safely, give yourself extra travel time, and be patient."
Northglenn police reported that I-25 southbound was closed at 120th Avenue due to the icy conditions on the roadway and semitrailers blocking the interstate. Traffic was being diverted from the interstate onto the 120th Avenue off-ramp.
"Please drive safely in these dangerous conditions," the Northglenn Police Department said on X.
The National Weather Service said at about 9:15 p.m. that the snow bands were starting to dissipate, but that black ice would be an issue overnight for drivers.
CSP said that the interstate was closed in Douglas County Tuesday night for ice on the roadway that caused multiple crashes. The trooper told FOX31 that some cable rail was down due to a single-vehicle crash on the roadway at milepost 180.
