HSPPR shares tips for a petfriendly New Years Day
Dec 31, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — New Year's Eve usually means fireworks, and while that can bring joy and celebration to people, for animals it brings fear and hiding. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) is sharing some tips to keep your pet safe and sound during celebrations.
HSPPR said while you are ringing in the new year with joy and celebration, your pets might be hiding under the bed, shaking in fear. Unfortunately, many pets get so scared they run away from home. HSPPR said the following can help keep your pet safe:
Make sure your pet's tags and microchip information are up to date
Take your dog out for a walk earlier in the day to burn off some energy and give them a bathroom break before the fireworks start.
Keep your pets inside with you and away from loud noises. Do not take pets to fireworks events.
If you must step outside, keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier.
Ensure your yard's fence is escape-proof. HSPPR said Colorado's winds can be pretty wild so make sure your fence is sturdy enough to withstand any gusts.
Set up a quiet area with familiar bedding and soothing music. Pets love having a little escape pod like a crate or bed where they can feel safe. Let them hid away from the chaos if they need to.
Practice fire safety and keep your pets far away from fireworks, matches, or lighter fluid as they can be dangerous if sniffed or eaten.
HSPPR wishes everyone a safe, pet-friendly holiday.
