Fireworks can be a challenge for North Dakotans with PTSD and anxiety
Dec 31, 2024
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — North Dakotans are known for starting the new year off with a bang. That means there will be plenty of fireworks going off — but this can sometimes declare open fire on people's mental health.
For people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, misophonia, or sensitivity to noise, fireworks can trigger anger, distress, flashbacks, or even suicidal thinking — and certain groups are more likely to have health conditions that make fireworks a trigger. For example, the National Center for PTSD says veterans and active service members are more likely to be diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety than the general population.

More than 56,000 veterans call North Dakota home, and this means there's a sizable population that could be sensitive to fireworks. Mental health advocate Kristin Larson says it's important to consider others if you plan on setting off a few fireworks today.
"It's a fun time, right?" she said. "We're celebrating New Year's Eve; we're going into the new year. But for people who don't have the problem, right? It's easy to say. But for people who struggle, those are the folks that we need to remember."
Larson says it's a good idea to ask your neighbors if they're okay with you lighting off fireworks. In addition, she recommends reaching out for support, getting a pair of noise-canceling headphones, and practicing breathing exercises. She also says that if you need to remove yourself from a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable tonight, you should do it.
