Dec 31, 2024
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- With 2025 just hours away, police officers are encouraging the public not to "drop the ball" on safety.
The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said if you plan on drinking to celebrate the new year, do not drive.
According to the police department, traffic-related crashes often increase during holiday celebrations, especially when alcohol is involved.

For party-goers who are joining the 2025 festivities, officers said to plan your ride ahead of time and to consider using rideshare services, taxis or public transit.
"Let’s ring in 2025 on a good note with responsible choices. By planning ahead and keeping safety in mind, you can ensure that your New Year’s Eve celebration is one to remember—for all the right reasons," said the Fairfax County Police Department in a release.

Police encourage anyone hosting a party for the holiday to do some of the following to make sure everyone gets home safely:
Designate a Driver: Encourage guests to have a designated driver or organize a rideshare group.
Offer Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Sparkling cider, mocktails and festive non-alcoholic options can help everyone feel included.
Provide Food: Snacks and appetizers can slow the absorption of alcohol.
Monitor Consumption: Keep an eye on your guests, and do not hesitate to cut someone off if needed.
Police said if you plan to drive on New Year's Eve, stay fully alert and in control of the wheel.
