SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- After San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas announced her decision to vacate her position at the end of her current term, three people have announced their desire to sit in her place. Vargas announced plans to step down from elected office at the conclusion of her first term on Dec. 20, stating that her decision was based on “personal safety and security." “It has been my honor to serve in public office during unprecedented times, including the past four years on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors,” Vargas said. Vivian Moreno launches bid for Vargas’ seat on Board of Supervisors Since then, San Diego City Councilmember Vivian Moreno and Chula Vista Mayor John McCann have expressed their interest in running to fill her vacancy. The latest to throw in her name for the bid is Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre, who announced her intent to run on Monday. "South County has been ignored for too long -- and I'm ready to change that," she stated on her campaign website. "From fighting the sewage crisis polluting our air and water to standing up for working families and demanding our fair share, we need bold leadership now more than ever," she said on Instagram. "As Mayor of Imperial Beach and a lifelong environmental advocate, I'm not afraid of making waves." Under board policies, the supervisors will be required to decide within seven business days of a vacancy opening how they plan to fill it. This could either be by appointment or through a special election. Vargas, who was the first person of color and Latina to hold elected office on the board, stated in her announcement about her decision to step down that her priority “has always been our community, ensuring that everyone can be seen, heard and have a chance to thrive.” “As a Guerrera at my core, I remain committed to continuing the fight for equity, justice, and human rights – just in a different capacity,” Vargas added. “I look forward to staying whole-heartedly engaged and active in the pursuit of a more equitable society.”
