'Wake up safe tomorrow': WPD reminding community to drive safe tonight
Dec 31, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - The Wichita Police Department will be out Tuesday night to keep the streets safe, looking for people driving under the influence.
If you are going to consume alcohol, police say now is the time to prepare for a way to get home safely.
"Sober driver. Uber, Lyft. A taxi. You know, call a parent. Call a friend. Call anyone that hasn't been drinking that can potentially help save your life," said WPD Lt. Keith Forte.
If you're going out with friends, designate a driver before leaving the house to ensure everyone gets home safely.
Lt. Forte said that many officers have been affected by a DUI driver.

"It personalizes it when you know someone, you have a relative, friend, family member, coworker that has been involved in a DUI-related accident, and it pushes you to go out and try and take those people off the streets," he said.
WPD asks people who see someone driving erratically to call 911.
Sedgwick County Emergency Communications will also have a non-emergency phone line available for New Year’s. Beginning at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, you can call 316-290-1011 to report any complaints or concerns about fireworks, parties, or excessive noise. The line will be active through 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.
