ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The fallout continues after an alleged altercation between Lobo men's basketball players during the team's trip to a Palm Springs, CA tournament last month. A newly filed civil rights lawsuit has accused coaching staff of brushing aside what they call "hazing and violent behavior."

Freshman Shane Douma-Sanchez is now suing the university and head coach Richard Pitino in a civil rights lawsuit claiming, in part, that the team's coaching staff "disregarded incidents of hazing and violent behavior." Douma-Sanchez spoke to KRQE Investigates in early December claiming he was punched in the nose and hit in his already-injured shoulder by an unnamed player on the team after they took a plane flight to Palm Springs for a tournament.
The lawsuit claims the fight came after Douma-Sanchez was subject to prior name-calling and harassment which they claim "made him feel unwelcome and unsafe on the team"… and that "UNM turned a blind eye to a pattern of misconduct."
Since the incident went public in December, new Athletic Director Fernando Lovo and Coach Pitino have remained mum in response to the allegations. "We are handling any discipline matters internally, but other than that, there's not a whole lot I can say specifically," said Pitino earlier this month.
"We're following all of our policies and procedures, both student and student-athlete code of conduct, and while that process is ongoing, I can't comment any further," said Lovo earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the lawsuit also accused the university and Pitino of negligence in the "operations and maintenance" of the men's basketball program.
UNM's administration has not responded to the lawsuit yet which was just filed on Monday. KRQE News 13 also reached out to but did not hear back from the attorneys for Shane Douma-Sanchez and the unnamed team player who's been accused of having a role in the alleged attack. So far, no criminal cases have been filed.
