Allen County Sheriff's Department identifies officer who shot, killed man in Huntertown

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- The Allen County Sheriff's Department has identified the officer who shot and killed a man during a standoff in Huntertown Dec. 17.
Authorities identified the officer as Cpl. Ben Fries, who has served in the Allen County Sheriff's Department for more than 13 years.
The standoff started when officers responded to the 2700 block of Ascension Court -- located in a neighborhood off Carroll Road -- on reports of a man armed with a gun. Initial reports also indicated he was going through a "mental health crisis."
During the standoff, which lasted roughly 90 minutes, the man exited a house twice while armed as police attempted to deescalate the situation. Cpl. Fries shot the man when he exited the house while armed the second time, according to the Allen County Sheriff's Department.
Coroner identifies man shot, killed by sheriff’s officer
The man, later identified by the Allen County Coroner's Office as 51-year-old Jeffrey Stoppenhagen, was pronounced dead at a hospital after receiving treatment at the scene.
Indiana State Police is still investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure.
