(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) reported that on Monday, Dec. 30, a woman was booked into the El Paso County Jail and while being searched, an EPSO deputy discovered methamphetamine. According to EPSO, 34-year-old Shandra Rathke was booked into jail after a bond related to Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance charge was revoked. As part of Sheriff Roybal's Contraband Reduction Drug Amnesty Program, Rathke was asked to voluntarily surrender any contraband she had on her before entering the jail. EPSO said that Deputy Barrow escorted Rathke into the jail and supervised her booking process. During the required pat-down search, Barrow observed that Rathke was behaving evasively and attempting to position her body in a way that would conceal her right arm. This led Barow to notice Rathke was hiding something in her right hand as she tried to put the thing in her mouth. According to EPSO, Barrow recognized the immediate danger and quickly restrained Rathke to prevent her from swallowing the item. When the item was recovered, it was recognized as a plastic bag containing a then-unknown substance, later identified as 2.64 grams of methamphetamine. Rathke was charged with Introduction of Contraband and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance. Sheriff Joseph Roybal commented on the situation, saying “As we enter the New Year, I want to make it absolutely clear: if you bring dangerous contraband into my jail, you will be held accountable. Deputy Barrow’s keen eye and quick action ensured the safety of everyone under our care. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting this facility and all those within it.”
