BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to find people who are drinking and driving and get them off the streets.
The agency will increase its patrols this week by utilizing its motorcycle units.
“Tonight, for the first time ever, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office - the entire traffic unit to include our motorcycle unit - will be out conducting enforcement in high crash areas. They will be looking for focusing on aggressive, driving, speeders, seatbelt violations, texting and driving following too close and most importantly, impaired driving,” said Lt. Paul Yacobozzi with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
The motorcycle team is brand new to the department this year.
In addition to patrols, there will be a joint safety checkpoint on the border of Berkeley County and Dorchester County on Highway 17-A in Summerville, basically in front of Earth Fare.
Why do police agencies announce DUI checkpoints before they happen?
“We also have our transport van out there, so if we do catch somebody driving impaired, we have a van that goes straight to Hill Finklea Detention Center right there,” he added.
Two other safety checkpoints are planned in Moncks Corner.
“Every 39 minutes a person is killed by a drunk driver. Our goal tonight is to have zero fatalities, zero drunk driving crashes, so we’re gonna be out there looking for those impaired drivers. And tonight being New Year’s Eve, and one of the more heavier drinking holidays, that’s why it’s all hands on deck for the traffic team to keep everyone safe and to keep all of these motorists safe as well,” said Lt. Yocobozzi.
These increased patrols began on Sunday and will continue until midnight Wednesday.
