BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The end of the year is a time for celebration and fun, but unfortunately, New Year's Eve introduces elevated risks of accidents.
The California Highway Patrol Maximum Enforcement Period to crack down on drunk driving. Extra CHP officers will be on patrol beginning at 6:01 p.m. tonight until 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Day.
That's why CHP officer DC Williams encourages you to find a designated driver if you plan on ringing in the new year with a beverage or two.
Despite companies providing free rides to help you get to and from your NYE parties, drunk driving remains just as big of a problem, according to Williams. Holiday travel is ongoing and Williams shared some tips to keep in mind before hitting the road.
Holiday travel safety tips
Be patient.
Make sure vehicle maintenance is current.
Check the tires ensuring good tread and not worn or bald.
Check windshield wipers and headlights.
Slow down and follow behind traffic at a safe distance.
Make sure you have a bag with waters, snacks, blankets, and an emergency kit.
Don't engage with aggressive drivers.
In fog don't use high beams or spot lights.
