Former President Jimmy Carter set to be honored in Atlanta, Plains and Washington, D.C.

Former President Jimmy Carter will receive a State Funeral and Procession befitting for a head of state. On January 4 at around 10:55 AM, Carter will depart Plains for the Georgia State Capitol. Before the Carter Family arrives in Atlanta, there will be a salute at his childhood home. At 3:00 PM, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp will lead a ceremony honoring Carter’s life and legacy inside the Georgia State Capitol. Upon the conclusion of the service, Carter will lie in repose at The Carter Center. Mourners may come and pay their respects from 7 PM to 6 AM on Tuesday, January 7.On that day, Special Air Mission 39 arrives at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, at 12:45 PM. Carter’s remains will be transferred with ceremony to the hearse. At that moment, Carter and his family will then travel by motorcade at 1:15 PM. to the U.S. Navy Memorial, where his remains will be transferred from the hearse to a horse-drawn caisson for a funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol at 2 PM.Carterwill lie in State inside the United States Capitol for about 36 hours. Next, there will be state funeral at Washington National Cathedral, a customary procedure for deceased American heads of state. President Joe Biden will eulogize Carter in a televised ceremony. After the cathedral service, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and taken by motorcade to Plains, where he will be interred in the family plot. Carter will then lie in state while the military maintains a guard of honor.
