Be prepared to add another name to the very long list of quarterbacks that have started for the Browns since 1999. Coach Kevin Stefanski on a Zoom call Dec. 31 wouldn’t divulge his exact plans for the season finale Jan. 4 in Baltimore, but he said he might use both Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe at quarterback. DTR started against the Bengals Dec. 22 and the Dolphins a week later. The Browns lost both games. He threw a combined four interceptions and lost a fumble. The 2023 fifth-round draft choice from UCLA has thrown one touchdown pass and 10 interceptions  in 14 games for the Browns over two seasons. He is 1-4 as a starter. Thompson-Robinson will likely start against the Ravens, but if Stefanski decides to go with Zappe and use DTR only in plays designed specifically for him, Zappe would become the 39th quarterback to start for the Browns in 26 years. Zappe would be the fourth quarterback to start for the 3-12 Browns this year, following Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston and DTR. “There’s certainly a chance that I could play Bailey and Dorian in this game,” Stefanski said. “Jameis is still working through that shoulder injury, so I envision him being the emergency quarterback in this game and then there’s potential to play both guys.” Keeping his quarterback plans a mystery isn’t likely to gain much of a competitive edge on the Ravens. The Ravens (11-5) are 18-point favorites. All that’s standing in the way of them clinching the AFC North title is a victory over the Browns. “Bailey has been a guy that got here. Haven’t seen him in a game just yet,” Stefanski said. “Dorian is a young player who’s using all these reps to get better. So, there’s a scenario where we do that, but I want to make sure we get through the week before making a final determination.” Zappe was signed to the Browns active roster from the Chiefs’ practice squad on Oct. 22 — two days after Watson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in a game with the Bengals. Zappe, who played college ball at Houston Christian and Western Kentucky, was a fourth-round draft pick by the Patriots in 2022. He was 2-0 as a rookie and 2-4 last year. He threw 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions in 14 games over two seasons with New England. The last two weeks have been difficult for Thompson-Robinson. He was named the starter after Winston was benched for throwing three interceptions in a 21-7 loss to the Chiefs on Dec. 15. Winston threw eight picks in a three-game span. DTR was hopeful a week of practicing with the first team would better prepare him to face the Bengals, but it did not help. He played like a snarling wolf was at his heels for four quarters in the Cincinnati and Miami games. After the loss to the Dolphins, in which he was called for intentional grounding three times in addition to turning the ball over twice, he admitted feeling like he is on a short leash makes it difficult to succeed. “It’s part of the position, part of where I’m at in my career,” Thompson-Robinson said. “It’s a learning experience, a growing experience, something I got to work through. It’s not an excuse. It’s just hard.” Regardless of whether he starts or is used as a sub against the Ravens, DTR might have played himself out of a chance to even be a backup quarterback with the Browns next season. But rather than kick his young quarterback when he’s down, Stefanski would not let Thompson-Robinson take the fall by himself when asked to assess the way DTR played in his two starts. “As a team, we’ve come up short and certainly there are things that I know I can do better, we as a team can do better,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, it’s always going to start with taking care of the football. So, that’s something that we’ll look to do a better job of this week.” The Browns have turned the ball over 32 times — 11 lost fumbles and 21 interceptions thrown. Only the Titans (33), also 3-12, have turned the ball over more. The Browns are the worst in the league in takeaway/giveaway at minus-20. Roster moves Wide receiver Cedric Tillman (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Dec. 31. He was injured Nov. 21 in a game with the Steelers. He missed the previous five games with the injury. Running back John Kelly was signed to fill Tillman’s roster spot. Stefanski did not have a status update on injured running backs Jerome Ford (ankle) and Pierre Strong (head) during the Dec. 31 Zoom call.
