ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A new law goes into effect next year in Livingston County that aims to reduce the number of false alarm calls from security systems. The law applies to residences and businesses in an effort to ensure emergency service providers are not diverted to false calls. Starting January 1, 2025, all residents and businesses must register their security alarm devices with the Livingston County Sheriff's Office within sixty days of activation or face a $50 fine. Furthermore, automatic device dialers can not call 911 but instead must call a phone number made for alarms (585-234-7117) Security alarm users may also be penalized if a false alarm is activated. The first time may result in a written warning, but a second false alarm made within the same year would result in a $50 fine. Any additional fines in a year increase by $25. According to the law, residents must pay the fines within 30 days of receiving notice. Those who were fined can appeal with the County Administrator and the Sheriff's Office within 15 days. Residents with security alarm devices can find the Alarm Information Sheet by clicking here. Full Law Alarm-Local-LawDownload You can read the full law above.
