MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A monkey being driven in a Rolls Royce on a Madera County highway was stopped after the driver of the luxury car was found to be traveling over the speed limit Monday evening, according to the CHP.
Officers say the Rolls Royce Ghost was stopped on Highway 99, north of Avenue 17, for excessive speed. Inside the car, officers found the spider monkey, believed to be one month old.

The driver was also found to be under the influence and arrested for DUI and possession of cannabis for sale.
According to the CHP, primates (such as monkeys) are illegal to own as pets in California; the monkey was taken from the scene by animal control.
The identity of the driver was not officially released.
