SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Original Pinkie Masters, the oldest running bar in downtown Savannah, is known for its vintage decor, cheap beer and, most notably, a very famous regular.
The bar, located on Drayton Street, was one of former President Jimmy Carter’s favorites.
According to Savannah lore, Carter jumped atop the bar to announce his candidacy for president. That story has since been debunked, but it’s one everyone knows.
"You know, you look around at this bar, I don't know if too many people are going to let the truth get in the way of a good story,” said Andrew Walker, manager of Pinkie Masters.

"There’s a ton of pictures of them together,” said Walker. “They look very comfortable around one another. They look very chummy."
One regular, Billy Walker, who comes into the bar every day, has personal ties to Carter.
"I served aboard a ship in Vietnam, from which Adm. Stansfield Turner was the captain,” Walker said. “He and Jimmy Carter were roommates in Annapolis. He, being Stansfield Turner, spoke extremely highly of Jimmy Carter all the time."
Walker shared a common sentiment many believe about Carter’s legacy.
"I have nothing bad to say about the former president, and I'm a Republican,” he said. “He was unbelievable, just unbelievable."
