LA VERNE — The Roosevelt boys basketball team averaged 84 points per game in their first 15 games this season entering the Platinum Division championship game for The Classic at Damien. Monday, the Mustangs proved they don’t need to score a lot of points in order to beat a top-level team. Roosevelt, ranked No. 1 in the state by Calhisports.com, scored a season-low in points but still held off No. 2 St. John Bosco 56-55 in overtime at Damien High School. It was the second straight year Roosevelt beat St. John Bosco in the championship game after a 68-65 win last year. “We’ve been scoring a lot, but I’ve seen a lot of the St. John Bosco games,” Roosevelt coach Stephen Singleton said. “They do a great job defensively making it hard for teams to score. I knew it was going to be a grind unless we could get out and run a little. We just had to play a grind-out brand of basketball today and we did.” Tournament MVP Brayden Burries scored the final of his game-high 24 points on a free throw with 8.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Mustangs a 56-52 lead. Max Ellis (10 points) made a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to close the Braves’ gap to a point, but after a timeout, the Mustangs were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock. “Two great teams,” St. John Bosco coach Matt Dunn said. “Both teams are really good defensively and if we don’t have a ton of time to prepare, it’s hard to score. Roosevelt is a worthy champion, they’re really good. I felt like our toughness was pretty impressive tonight.” The biggest play in overtime came with 24.2 seconds left. Roosevelt led 53-51 after two Burries free throws when the Braves’ Christian Collins (20 points) appeared to make a game-tying runner in the lane. But the basket was not only waved off, but he was charged with his fifth personal foul, fouling out. “I felt like when he came (in the lane), he did push me,” Burries said. “I felt like he was trying to bump into me and I fell and they called the charge. I thought they called a block, because they hadn’t called a charge for us all game.” “They made one basket in overtime. We had the same number of baskets taken away they scored in the whole overtime,” Dunn said. “It’s frustrating. But I want to reiterate that Roosevelt is very good and a very worthy champion.” Neither team led by more than the six points that the Braves led by (37-31) early in the fourth quarter but it was Roosevelt which led 46-44 on a Myles Walker free throw with 13.1 seconds left before Collins’ layup with about three seconds left tied the game and sent the game to overtime. Walker added 13 points for the Mustangs, and impressively played down the stretch with four fouls. He picked up his fourth foul with 6:40 left in regulation. He left the game at that point, but re-entered less than two minutes later. He remained in the game until he fouled out with 10.8 seconds left in overtime. He scored eight of his points in the fourth quarter. “Myles Walker is the heart and soul of this team,” Singleton said. “I have to say this: any (Division I) coach that is not recruiting Myles Walker doesn’t know what they’re doing. He’s a Division I point guard and schools should be drooling over him.” Related Articles High School Sports | Ontario Christian girls basketball team routs Claremont to win its Knight Time Classic High School Sports | Rancho Cucamonga girls basketball team rolls past Valley View to win Ramona Winter Classic High School Sports | All-Inland Boys Water Polo: Yucaipa’s Blake Minkler is the IE Varsity Player of the Year High School Sports | All-Inland Flag Football: Roosevelt’s Lotolelei Sivas is the IE Varsity Player of the Year High School Sports | Roosevelt boys basketball team rolls into Classic at Damien Platinum Division championship game Chris Komin had 17 points and Max Ellis added 10 for St. John Bosco, which played the game without star point guard Brandon McCoy Jr. Issac Williamson, who made a school-record 10 3-pointers in scoring 34 points in Roosevelt’s semifinal win Saturday, added nine points Monday.
