Local police stepping up DUI patrols on New Year's Eve
Dec 31, 2024
WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Police departments across Rhode Island will be cracking down on impaired driving this New Year’s Eve.
Warwick Police Chief Col. Bradford Conner urges anyone going out to drink to find a safe ride home.
"Each of the cities and towns in the state will have a patrol out there specifically looking for drunk drivers," he explained.
Conner said they are doing it with the help of the B.A.T. Mobile, which will be set up on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston.
Once a driver suspected of being under the influence is pulled over and taken off the road, they are brought to the B.A.T. Mobile to take a breathalyzer test.

"It's all intended so that the officer that makes the arrest can go right back on the road, after dealing with the prisoner, and get another drunk driver," Conner said.
Rideshare services are much cheaper than a DUI, Conner added.
"A DUI arrest is life-changing, it's thousands of dollars in fines, it's driver retraining, and most importantly it's a loss of license," he explained. "Not only do you lose your license, but it could affect your employment."
"Worst of all if you hurt someone, it's going to change lives," he continued. "It's going to destroy families and friends."
Officers can't do it alone and ask drivers to give them a call if they see someone who may be drinking and driving.
"Make a plan," Conner said. "Make a plan to get home, use a rideshare, use a designated sober driver, or stay where you are but don't get on the road drunk."
