NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A prominent political science professor at Norfolk State University has died, according to officials with the university.
Professor Carol Pretlow has been with NSU for over 30 years and was a beloved member of the Department of Political Science. Many people also knew her from her appearances on the talk show "Another View Round Table," a nationally recognized show which focuses on issues surrounding the African American community.
NSU released a statement regarding Pretlow's passing, which can be read in part below:
Professor Pretlow's commitment to the field of political science, her passion for teaching, and her unwavering dedication to her students were evident in all aspects of her work. She served Norfolk State University for over thirty years and not only imparted valuable knowledge in the classroom but also inspired generations of students to think critically about the world around them and engage with political issues on a deeper level. Her expertise, warmth, and generosity of spirit will be greatly missed by colleagues, students, and everyone fortunate enough to have worked with her.

Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander also released a statement on Facebook following Pretlow's passing, where he spoke about her generosity and wisdom, saying that Pretlow's passing is a "tremendous loss."
When I first started teaching, I sought Professor Pretlow's expertise in designing an Introduction to International Relations/Diplomacy course at Tidewater Community College. She generously shared her wisdom on how to instruct students on the complex factors shaping national policies, including geographical, demographic, economic, and ideological influences. Her insights into international conflicts and their resolution were invaluable, offering a nuanced understanding of the underlying causes of global discord and cooperation.
