Area law enforcement encouraging you to be safe to start the new year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Law enforcement on both sides of the state line wants to encourage everyone to safely ring in the new year.
Beginning Tuesday night, they'll be out in force on the roadways.

You'll notice more law enforcement from around 6 p.m. through midnight on Wednesday to ensure people follow the laws.
Law enforcement wants to remind people if their New Year's celebration involves alcohol, designate a driver, or use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. Rideshares will sometimes offer free rides for New Year's or discounted prices.
During last year's counting period in Missouri of the new year, nine people died and 293 were injured in 821 crashes.

Missouri will enforce its hands-free law, meaning if you use your phone, you could get fined.On the Kansas side, like in Olathe, the police department will be conducting a saturation patrol beginning today.
