Test scheduled for sirens around Catawba and McGuire nuclear stations
Dec 31, 2024
CHARLOTTE, NC – Don’t be surprised if you hear the warning sirens around the Catawba and McGuire nuclear stations on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.
Duke Energy and county officials will test the 89 sirens within 10 miles of the Catawba Nuclear Station in York, S.C., and the 67 sirens within 10 miles of the McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville.
People who live in those areas can expect a full-volume, three minute test between 11am and 1pm. There will also be five to 30-second tests.
If there is ever a real emergency at the plants requiring the sirens to be sounded, local television and radio stations will broadcast information and instructions to the public.
